KENILWORTH WATER TOWER -
from John Taylor
In August 2008 the Kenilworth Weekly News carried a poem of some 68 verses, written by W L Griffith in the 1930s, giving a snapshot of life in the area in the early 1900s.
Some of the verses tell of the water tower on Tainter’s Hill that used to be a windmill. One of these reads:
“The town’s most prominent advert so far
Was a Singer Cycle or Singer Car
Painted on the Water tower in green
From all over Kenilworth it could be seen.”
This prompted an elderly resident to produce this picture of the tower, which was taken over 60 years ago.
Another verse reads:
“A novelty which always attracted that time
Was a Brass Band on a bicycle all in line
Some 8 or 10 players on Singer freak frame Exceptionally long, but one bike all the same.”
There is a picture in ‘The Singer Story’ of 14 members of Singer’s Apollo Silver Band
